These products are made by Jarum Co., an Indonesian company born in Kudus, the birthplace of Kretek tobacco. Jarum began selling hand-rolled Kretek cigarettes in 1972 and has since succeeded in developing low-tar Kretek tobacco, gaining a worldwide reputation among tobacco enthusiasts.

The origins of Kretek date back to the late 19th century. It is said that a man named Haji Jamali, living in Central Java, started mixing cloves with tobacco to treat his bronchial asthma, thus creating the first Kretek cigarette.

Why Kretek Cigarettes Are Popular

The reason Kretek tobacco is so popular lies in the sweet aroma of cloves. It produces a unique flavor different from other types of tobacco, and the compounds in cloves are believed to have relaxing and pain-relieving effects.
